A client overheard some of his employees talking about “discrimination by association”. He hadn’t heard of it before and wasn’t even sure if it even existed. Well, it does exist in law and is designed to protect employees against discrimination based upon the disability of a relative. It also applies to anyone who is a dependent such as a partner, child or elderly parent. The important thing to remember is less favourable treatment of a person because of their association with someone who has a disability would amount to discrimination.
